It’s no secret that smartphones have become an essential and constant part of our everyday lives. When we aren’t talking on the phone, we’re checking social media. When we aren’t searching the Internet, we’re text messaging. Smartphones have revolutionized the way we communicate, giving us a non-stop ability to engage and connect with others whenever and wherever we want. Our phones are now “a central social, communication, and information tool” (IDC, 2013). Due to the constantly connected lifestyle that smartphones have given consumers, more and more of us are now looking to our phones for help when shopping for products and services.
Last month, Google and Nielson teamed up to conduct research concerning mobile users and their path to purchasing products/services using their mobile devices. According to the study, mobile users spend a substantial amount of time researching products/services on their smartphones before making a purchase. So in what ways are these consumers executing their research?
Survey results reveal that most mobile users turn to search engines when beginning the research process for products/services. Forty-eight percent of respondents chose to start their research with a search engine, as opposed to branded websites and apps.
Although not all consumers began their products/services research on a search engine, 74 percent said they use search engines at some point during the shopping process. So even if a consumer doesn’t start with a search engine, statistics show they are more than likely going to use one at some point before making a purchase decision.
So what does all this mean for your business? With more consumers using their smartphones to help meet their product/service needs, PPC advertising is the perfect way for you to generate new business. Because of the confined space on a smartphone screen, consumers are more likely to click on whatever is visible without scrolling. With PPC done properly, you’re able to ensure that your business’s ads will be there when potential customers are looking for what you have to offer.
